Custodial death bloat on police: Kodiyeri

State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Friday said that the custodial death of the main accused Sampath in the Puthur murder case is a bloat on the police force in the state.

The crime branch of the Kerala Police had Thursday filed a charge sheet against 12 police personnel, including two sub-inspectors and one assistant sub-inspector, in connection with the alleged custodial death of a prime suspect of the case.

The case relates to the death of a prime suspect in the murder of a businessman’s wife here. The 47-year-old woman was found murdered with her throat slit and her 70-year-old mother seriously injured at their home on March 23.

The minister speaking at a press conference here said that while the nabbing of the culprits in the case was prestigious to the police, the subsequent custodial death was a bloat to it.

The police should act only according to the law. The police should use their powers within the law from the moment they take a person into the custody till he is produced at a court, the minister said. The high-ranking police officers should see to it that everything is done according to the law, he said.

There was an increase in incidents of attacks from the part of the police these days, Kodiyeri said. The minister also said that there are attempts to show the government in an unfavourable light by highlighting the faults of the police.
